"Jim, any price for your
powder forecasts are worth
it. They're amazing. Last
year you helped influence
me to go to Jay Peak and
Snowbird before the 1-3
foot dumps, days before
anyone else. Enjoy your
vacation. Hopefully the Red
Sox stay in it. Thanks" |

Jim started
bestskiweather.com in 2002
as a hobby.
Kirt Zimmer, communications
manager at Stowe, Vermont,
began calling him Dr.
Weather and this name has
stuck.
Who is Jim Roemer ?(Jay Peak answers the question--click here)
Several newspapers have
asked Jim over the years,
Q- "Why would anyone pay
for weather information
where there is so much
available for free?
Jim's consistent response
has been--
" Let's say you are about
to make plans to go skiing
in Europe ( I had one such
client two years ago when
there was a drought there).
If I can tell you with 70%
accuracy that the next 2
weeks is going to be warm
and dry in Austria, but
that Colorado and New
England will get dumped on
with several feet of snow,
what would you rather do?
Spend hundreds of dollars
for your family to sun
bathe in Europe with their
skies in the closet or head
for the best powder?
Every meteorologist has
his/her own strength and
weaknesses, my strength is
definitely being able to
forecast for the mountains
better than anyone else."
He then added, " There have
been many, many times that
I have heard local TV and
radio stations in the big
cities miss a major rain or
snow event even 1-2 days in
advance. Accurate Weather
forecasts can save ski
resorts, skiers,
businesses, etc. millions
of dollars a year. Most
weather services have
automated products because
they are so busy with other
things. I take the time to
really sit down and help
the snowsports industry. It
is a passion of mine and
that is what I do best. Do
I blow a forecast
occasionally? Of course I
do, but I like to think
that update the changes
immediately. I also excite
the 'weather nuts' who want
to become amateur
meteorologists by learning
how to read weather maps.
In a way, it is like a
complete semester of
meteorological education
but for a fraction of the
cost. I have to charge
something because it is
incredibly time consuming
for me."
Jim, Q- " I know many ski
resorts have been able to
plan their daily or weekly
mountain operations better
on your forecasts and even
beef up their advertising
campaigns ahead of big
storms, but what would you
like to see ski areas do
different?"
"One of my longer term
goals is to help ski area
managers/owners use the
futures market to trade
natural gas or heating oil
in order to offset the
fluctuating energy
costs--their biggest
expense. This will go right
to their bottom line. I
would love to form some
kind of "ski area
consortium", in which
resorts pool money into a
commodity fund. There's no
question I can really help
them as I really understand
trading the energy markets.
The other option is
renewable energy. At first,
I was against wind
turbines, but the more I
read and learn the more I'm
interested in resorts using
wind energy or looking into
alternative energy
solutions such as
bio-diesel."

Jim's teacher at Lyndon was
responsible for starting
The Weather Channel back in
the early 1980's who is now

also involved lecturing to
universities about the
climatology of global

by hedging in the futures
market or buying weather
insurance packages. |
